Adele Underwood Thomson (1881-1956)

Adele Underwood Thomson studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Sophie Newcomb College with Will Stevens, Eliot O’Hara, Xavier Gonzalez, Reveau Bassett, John Vanderpoel, Adele Brunet and with Ellen Holmes. She began her art career in 1919 and her first recorded exhibition in Texas was in 1931. She was to settle in Corpus Christi  in 1942 where she was to become one of South Texas' most active exhibitors in regional and national exhibitions. She was a leader in the founding of the Corpus Christ Art Colony in 1946. Her evolving work from the traditional to the abstract cubist creations of the late 1940’s brought recognition and awards and accolades from the likes of Loren Mozley for her use of color, line, space, texture and form  She won numerous prizes for her works in venues i.e.,  Southern States Art League; South Texas Art League; Corpus Christi Art Guild;  The National Gallery Art; Corpus Christi Art Foundation; The National League of American Pen Women National Exhibition, Washington, D. C; Smithsonian Institution.
