Herman Nagel was
born in Newark, New Jersey. He studied at the National Academy of
Design. He worked as a commercial artist and teacher from his studio
in Newark. A member of the Salmagundi Club, he also exhibited with
the Society of Independent Artists, at the Detroit Institute of
Arts, at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Salons of America
which was organized in 1922. This painting is believed to be his
entry at the Ninth Annual Exhibition of the Detroit Institute of
Arts in 1923, "Backyards".
