Reveau Mott Bassett was a painter, etcher, illustrator,
pastelist, and teacher. He studied at the National Academy of
Design with Charles Curran and at the Art Student League
with Jospeh Pennell, W. R. Leigh, Boardman Robinson and Frank
Reaugh. He became one of Frank Reaugh’s favorite pupils and
often accompanied Reaugh on sketching trips. Bassett was a
successful commercial artist and a instructor at the Dallas Art
Institute, teaching etching techniques. He
exhibited at Fair Park in the Texas Fair Annuals, with the
Southern States Art League, at the National Academy of Design,
with the
Dallas Allied Artists, at the Oak Cliff Society of Art, with
the Dallas Woman’s Club,
with the Lone Star Printmakers and had numerous solo exhibitions
in venues such as Joseph
Sartor Galleries.
He became known for his wildlife paintings which to were grace
the covers of numerous regional magazines.His
paintings often reflect an influence from the plein air works of
Frank Reaugh with whom he worked and studied on many painting
trips to West Texas and New Mexico.
